DESCRIPTION:

Assists in the operations of the Academic Support Center, tutors in math related subjects, and provides responsible and complex administrative support to the Coordinator, Writing and Academic Support Centers.

Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:
Assists in the day-to-day operation and activities of the Academic Support Center including scheduling, supervising, developing new materials, and training.
Provides one-on-one tutoring assistance and group facilitation in a relevant, academic subject as scheduled.
Supervises the Academic Support Center lab, assists with special events, and operates a variety of general office equipment. 
Manages, develops, and conducts tutor training for the Academic Support Center and the Writing Center in accordance with national certification standards; maintains completion records and certificates pertinent to certification.
Manages college placement and other entrance exam preparatory programs; enrolls students in preparatory programs, and reviews progress.
Develops and maintains online resources; coordinates with webmaster to maintain the Academic Support Center page.
Prepares, types, and proofreads a variety of documents; copies, faxes, and distributes documents as needed; organizes and maintains usage statistics and other pertinent reports.
Assists with the publicity of Academic Support Center programs and services.
Conducts inventory, maintains and orders supplies and materials as needed for the Academic Support Center and the Writing Center. 
Participates in professional development activities, department and committee meetings, and required employee training.
Marginal Functions:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintains a consistent work schedule.
Serves on institutional committees as needed.
Assists with registration and graduation as needed.
Serves as an advocate for and support college functions/college activities.
This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. The President or appropriate supervisory personnel may assign additional duties. QUALIFICATIONS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Knowledge of:

Operations, services, and activities of the department and division.

Principles and procedures of the academic support functions.

Principles, roles, and responsibilities of tutoring and facilitating.

Principles and philosophy of training.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Community College operations as they relate to other forms of post-secondary education.

Operation and use of computer equipment and related software including data base, spreadsheets, and word processing applications.

Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment.

Principles and procedures of record keeping. 

 

Ability to:

Maintain and update computer records, files, and other documents.

Compile information and prepare computer-generated reports.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Environmental Conditions:

The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace and working closely with others. 

The employee must sustain the work environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

 

Physical Conditions:

Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.

The employee must maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously. 

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel. 

 

Scheduling Conditions: 

This is a full-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location for at least forty hours per week, Monday through Friday. This position requires day, evening, and occasional weekend hours.

 

Traveling Conditions:

Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites, maybe needed. Out-of-state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences. 

 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Experience:

Minimum two years of tutoring or teaching experience in college-level math required.
Experience tutoring or teaching science or computer science preferred.
Community College experience preferred.
Training:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in math or a related field required.
