Job Function
Provide tutoring and language practice services for multilingual students, mentor and train consultants in TESOL best practices, coordinate with faculty to conduct classroom outreach and manage group practice sessions. Work with students to improve reading and writing abilities and promote student success.
Job Responsibilities
* Work one-on-one and in groups with students across the curriculum to develop and improve writing strategies, critical thinking, organization, and sentence-level coherence and readability
* Help students develop and enhance strategies for general and academic reading, including pre-reading, thought mapping, critical thinking, comprehension, and engaged questioning
* Assist students in identifying and prioritizing next steps for reading and writing assignments and setting goals for class success
* Keep daily records, including attendance, session descriptions, and student progress using data management software
* Collaborate with faculty and Reading & Writing Studios leadership to organize, plan, and run group study sessions for students in EAPP (ESL) courses and conversation practice sessions for multilingual students
* Collaborate with Reading & Writing Studios leadership to plan and present training for new consultants and fellows in the CRLA-approved tutoring certificate and mentoring program, ensuring pedagogy aligns with TESOL best practices
* Assist in coordination with counselors and consultants to implement and persistently improve 1:1 tutoring support for students with special needs and/or accommodations
* Maintain familiarity with adaptive technology offered in the Reading & Writing Studios and inform students and consultants about this technology when appropriate
* Support new consultants in identifying and adopting modes of tutoring and use of assistive technology that adhere to ADA specifications and promote inclusive learning
* Collaborate with Reading & Writing Studios leadership, consultants, and faculty partners to curate, revise, and develop new online and asynchronous resources
* Collaborate directly with faculty and Reading & Writing Studios leadership to design and conduct special outreach and tutoring projects, including workshops and classroom visits
* Maintain rapport with students and consultants, alert supervisors of student learning issues, and communicate these using early intervention protocols (“WCO Flag for follow up,” Maxient, and Macomb Success Link) as directed
* Achieve and CRLA certification and adhere to CRLA curriculum and Reading & Writing Studios supported tutoring approaches
* Participate in regular observation, review, and professional development opportunities both within and outside of Macomb Community College, including seeking out and maintaining membership in relevant professional organizations, such as TESOL
* Perform other duties as assigned

Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, Communication, Education, Linguistics, or Language Arts
- TESOL Certification OR 2 or more years tutoring ELL students in a higher-education setting
Preliminary Qualifications
Preference given to applicants with relevant tutoring, teaching, or community resource experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge—Experience working with the following populations: special needs populations, at-risk populations, second-language learners, non-traditional students, returning veterans, and immigrant and refugee populations.
- Skill—Strong communication and presentation skills, including ability to collaborate with diverse populations and various members of a student’s instructional team.
- Ability—Experience working in person one-on-one and with groups, as well as online, specifically with Microsoft Office, video conferencing, and online scheduling technology; ability to document session summaries and progress reports using shared assessment terms supported by the Studio.
Pedagogical understanding of one or more of the following areas preferred: adult literacy, technical or scientific writing, general to specific teaching strategies, genre analysis.
