Seeking Caregiver for Young Man with Disabilities
Looking for a responsible, reliable, and friendly caregiver to provide direct support for a fun and active 18-year-old male. We are a close-knit, busy family that wants our disabled young adult son to continue having an engaging life with academic and social success. He will be completing high school this spring and starting a new transition program in the fall. We will need full-time support this summer, part-time support in the afternoons for the 2023-24 school year, and full-time support during school holidays and breaks for the 2023-24 school year. We live in San Francisco.
Our son is happy and social. He has a great sense of humor. He has an intellectual disability and a communication disorder. He is strong, tall, and ambulatory. He enjoys being outdoors, doing things in the community, and exploring. He loves people, dogs, animals, sports, music, TV, movies, and YouTube.
Dates & Schedules (to be confirmed):
- Full-time (M-F, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM): June 5, 2023 – August 18, 2023 (Summer)
- Part-time (M-F, 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM): August 21, 2023 – May 31, 2024 (School Year)
- Full-time (M-F, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM): Thanksgiving Break 11/20/23–11/22/23, Winter Break 12/18/23–1/2/24 (not Christmas), Spring Break 3/25/24–3/29/24, other school holidays
Roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring his safety and fostering his independence
- Providing friendship/companionship
- Guiding him on excursions in the community such as the SF Zoo, CA Academy of Sciences, Pier 39, dog parks, Golden Gate Park, local basketball courts, swimming, beaches, and libraries
- Taking him to speech therapy sessions
- Supporting virtual literacy sessions (tutor will deliver instruction over Zoom)
- Facilitating communication using assistive technology (LAMP Words for Life app)
- Providing personal care and support for all activities of daily living (in the bathroom, dressing, eating, etc.)
- Communicating clearly with parents and service providers
Qualities we are looking for:
- Enthusiastic and high-energy with a sense of humor
- Mentor and companion – someone who likes to guide, explore, and help find new interests
- Respectful, compassionate, patient, and flexible
- Communicative and open to learning
- Someone who is invested in our son’s growth
Qualifications such as a college degree, previous experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or health care experience and academic support experience are preferred.
The rate of pay is $20-$25 per hour depending on experience and academic background. Training will be provided.
A clean criminal record is a must. Background check, fingerprinting, and TB test are required.
Candidates must be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. You may also be requested to wear a mask during working hours.
