Director of Aviation/Instructor

Position Summary

The Director will administer programs, services, and activities related to Aviation. The Director serves on designated committees, participates in student related functions and performs all other duties as assigned by the Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development.   The individual in this position will work as part of a team within the Division on student recruitment, dual enrollment, work-based learning opportunities for students, and placement of graduates. Plans and delivers instruction as assigned for the aviation technology program.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule; D1 salary range ($45,676 - $92,513) for nine-month employment; summer employment may be available dependent on enrollment ($14,102 - $28,612).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer policies and procedures pertaining to programs, personnel, business functions, instruction, and facilities related to Aviation. 
  • Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff; assisting in developing and implementing professional development plans. 
  • Develop and submit reports and other documents as required by College, State and Federal agencies. 
  • Ensure that grades, attendance reports, and other documentation required by College, State and Federal agencies, etc. are submitted on or before the deadline. 
  • Assist with academic advising for students enrolled in Aviation programs. 
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal laws. 
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures of the College and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees. 
  • Ensure compliance with requirements of accrediting and certifying bodies including; but not limited to, the Federal Aviation Administration and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 
  • Develop, manage, and administer the Aviation program budget. 
  • Submit annual program budgets to the Department Chair and work closely with the appropriate Department Chair on the development of annual division budgets for approval by the appropriate Dean.
  • Teach the required course material effectively.
  • Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or on weekends.
  • Assist in implementing College policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with College philosophy and procedures.
  • Keep active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulate enthusiasm for those subjects. 
  • Conduct class evaluations and complete other College evaluations in accordance with College policy.
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of students.
  • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled.
  • Strive for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the College.
  • Refer to the department of Student Affairs’ reports on all students who require assistance.
  • Attend all faculty meetings, College assemblies, professional development, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President and Dean.
  • Make suggestions to the Dean concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the College.
  • Become thoroughly familiar and comply with all College policies and procedures.
  • Serve on College committees. 
  • Market to business and industry customized training, short-term training, and other workforce development services available from the College. 
  • Conduct department/program tours for prospective students and other interested parties. 
  • In cooperation with the Director of Technical Education and the Director of Technical Career Services, provide orientation and recruitment sessions for new students. 
  • Recruit prospective students by, but not limited to the following; making school visits and attending day/night and weekend college fairs, career days, community events and working with veteran organizations. 
  • In cooperation with the Director of Technical Education, evaluate previous work and education experience of applicants for employment and recommend to the appropriate Dean, college credit to be awarded for prior learning experience. 
  • Represent the Aviation program at community events, civic organizations, and aviation interests when needed. 
  • Develop and nurture relationships with local high school representatives and with area business and community leaders. 
  • Monitor and analyze aviation/aerospace industry trends; lead curricula revisions to reflect trends. 
  • Ensure proper maintenance and security of equipment and training aids. 
  • Maintain an inventory of College property. 
  • Ensure accurate records of student performance and attendance are maintained. 
  • Ensure that follow-up of program completers is conducted to ascertain employment placement and other required information. 
  • Establish class schedules and faculty teaching assignments. 
  • Ensure faculty practice safe use of tools and equipment and instruct students on safe practices. 
  • Assist prospective students, both in person and at a distance, in the application and enrollment process. 
  • Must have excellent and effective oral and written communication skills and excellent computer skills. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Associate’s degree or equivalent (at least 60 semester hours in a planned program, including associate degree core) from an accredited institution is required.
  2. Six (6) years of full-time experience in aviation maintenance and repair is required.
  3. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) A&P mechanic certification is required.
  4. Supervisory or management experience is required. 
  5. Experience in the aviation industry is required. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
  2. Teaching or administrative experience in a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificated Part 147 operation is preferred.
